Chapter 3

Temperament and Behavior

If the physical standard defines the Laizhou Hong's appearance, it is the temperament that defines its soul. And it is precisely here that this breed shines in an extraordinary way.

The Official Character

The CKU standard describes the ideal Laizhou Hong temperament with precision: friendly and calm, deeply devoted to the family. The dog should possess good working ability, courage and firmness. Self-confidence, fearlessness, adaptability and awareness of its social environment are essential traits.

In practice, this translates to a dog with a fascinating duality: protective and alert when the situation demands it, yet affectionate and calm in the home environment. It is a dog that can "read" its surroundings and adjust its behavior intelligently.

With the Family

The Laizhou Hong is deeply devoted to its people. It forms strong bonds with every member of the family and is recognized for its gentleness with children and the elderly. It is a dog that wants to be close, participate in the daily routine and feel part of the family unit.

Despite its imposing size, it tends to be calm and composed indoors. It is not a hyperactive or anxious dog. It understands when it is time to relax and when it is time to be on guard.

With Strangers

Naturally reserved with unfamiliar people, the Laizhou Hong is not aggressive without cause, but maintains a vigilant and protective stance. This trait makes it an excellent instinctive guard dog. It does not need to be taught to protect, but it does need to be socialized to distinguish real threats from everyday situations.

With Other Animals

When raised together from puppyhood, the Laizhou Hong gets along well with other dogs and household pets. Its confident and independent nature means it does not seek unnecessary conflict. However, like any large guard-type breed, early socialization is essential to ensure harmonious coexistence.

Intelligence and Trainability

The Laizhou Hong is an exceptionally intelligent dog. It learns quickly and demonstrates a remarkable ability to solve problems. Internationally, breed specimens have earned IGP (International Prüfungsordnung) titles at levels 1, 2 and 3 - obedience, tracking and protection trials that are considerable achievements even for traditional working breeds like the German Shepherd and the Malinois.

Beyond IGP, the breed has shown versatility in areas such as scent detection, tracking, animal-assisted therapy and agility. It is a dog that needs mental work to stay balanced, and when that need is met, the result is an extraordinary companion.

The Laizhou Hong combines the intelligence of the German Shepherd with the solidity of the Rottweiler and the imposing presence of the Great Dane, without the health problems that frequently affect those breeds.

Myths and Facts

Myth

The Laizhou Hong is naturally aggressive

Fact

Like any guard breed, the Laizhou Hong has a well-developed protective instinct. However, aggression is neither a desirable trait nor one selected for by responsible breeders. A well-socialized and trained dog is balanced and predictable.

Myth

The breed cannot adapt to apartments

Fact

Although the Laizhou Hong is a large breed that benefits from open space, apartment living is possible as long as its daily physical and mental exercise needs are met.

Myth

It does not need training because it is naturally protective

Fact

On the contrary, the breed requires training and socialization from puppyhood. A guard dog without guidance can develop unwanted behaviors. Training channels its instincts in a positive direction.

Individual temperament may vary. Early socialization, consistent training and proper management are fundamental for healthy behavioral development in any dog.
